元禄14年3月14日，赤穗藩藩主浅野内匠头（橋爪淳 饰）受到吉良上野介（西村晃 饰）误导，致令在众城主面前出丑。事后他恼羞成怒，刀伤吉良。然而此举发生在将军所在的内庭，属大逆不道之罪，浅野最终被判切腹谢罪，吉良则逍遥法外。噩耗传至赤穗，举城上下一片震惊。赤穗笔头家老大石内藏助（高倉健 饰）老成持重，他不愿主公背负罪名不得翻身，于是集结一众忠诚志士，忍辱负重，只为等待手刃吉良的复仇之日…… 本片根据日本元禄忠臣藏的故事改编，并荣获1995年亚太电影节最佳音乐奖；1995年日本电影金像奖最佳艺术指导、最佳剪辑、最佳音效和最佳男配角奖（中井貴一）；1995年电影旬报最佳男配角奖；1995年每日电影读者选择奖最佳影片；1994年东京国际电影节评委会特别奖。
