　　抗日战争时期，天竺山是闽南游击队的根据地，四位儿童团员位地下党护送情报历尽艰辛。领头的是小和尚阿根，他带着阿妹、马猴、小叫化子深入天竺山镇与鬼子汉奸周旋，在爱国台胞百合和小曾夫妇的掩护下，靠地下党情报员欧阳敏以死相救，终于完成了党交给的任务。

　　暑假即将开始了，可是12岁的男孩桑迪（伊利亚·伍德 Elijah Wood 饰）却并不开心。桑迪成长在一个破碎的家庭之中，母亲忙于工作无法照顾他，于是决定将他送到素未谋面的舅舅波特（保罗·霍根 Paul Hogan 饰）家中够几样。桑迪对波特舅舅并没有什么好印象，他位于海边的房子也令桑迪感到无趣至极。某日，桑迪救下了一只险些被猎杀者杀死的海豚。
　　忍无可忍的桑迪决定逃跑，可是当晚，海上刮起了飓风，所幸波特及时赶到，桑迪才捡回一条命，而波特的房子在飓风中毁于一旦。桑迪和波特达成了君子协议，桑迪帮波特修理损坏的房屋，波特则答应圆桑迪看演唱会的梦想。在此期间，被桑迪救下的海豚常常会来探望桑迪，一人一动物之间产生了友谊。
